Know Their Suffering: Facilitating a Deeper Understanding
for the Local Church of the Plight of the Working Poor

We all know that within any economy there will exist the haves and the have-nots. Regardless of our individual place in the upper or middle class, we are all prone to making assumptions about life for those who live at or below the poverty line. The question to be explored is how much do we truly know ABOUT their struggles, or do we just simply know OF them? What are the true challenges facing those wanting and willing to do whatever it takes to escape either situational or generational poverty? If you suddenly found yourself with minimal income, no savings, unable to live in the neighborhood you are familiar with, and didn’t have reliable transportation - could you survive? As a Christian seeking to follow Christ and help others, how much is enough and how much is too much? In this six-week class, Rev. David Weatherly will lead discussion, offer insightful information, and examine the challenges we face  when our faith takes puts us in the path of someone in need, with the goal being to facilitate a better understanding of life for those in scarcity.

This class is part of the research and teaching requirement for his Doctor of Ministry dissertation through Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C. There is no book or preparation for the class – except that you come with a heart for missions and a mind willing to ponder how society, government, the church, and YOU discover what life is really like for the working poor in our community. The class meets in the Spirit Center Wednesdays from 6:15-7:15pm September 4 – October 9.
