Wednesday Spiritual Growth Class

"You'll Get Through This"
October 20-November 17

Rev. Dr. David O. Weatherly will facilitate our next spiritual growth class on Wednesday, October 20, using Max Lucado's book "You'll Get Through This". It will cover five weeks, concluding on November 17. This study looks at the life of Old Testament Joseph, and how he overcomes sibling betrayal to regain his sense of purpose and claim God's call on his life.

Joseph may be known for having a colorful robe, but we forget that it came with a price. The robe became a symbol of his brother’s jealousy, which would ultimately motivate his siblings to sell him into slavery.

Most of us may not have to deal with that particular category of betrayal, but that doesn’t mean we haven’t found ourselves in a rut. We’re worried we won’t get out. We fear that the depression that sets in will never lift, the pain will never leave. We’re stuck in a pit, surrounded by steep walls and aching reminders, and we wonder, Will this gray sky ever brighten? This load ever lighten?

In "You’ll Get Through This", pastor and best-selling author Max Lucado offers faith-filled assurance. Max reminds us God doesn’t promise that getting through trials will be quick or painless. It wasn’t for Joseph–tossed in a pit by his brothers, sold into slavery, wrongfully imprisoned, forgotten and dismissed–but his Old Testament story is in the Bible for this reason: to teach us to trust God to overcome evil. Max explores the story of Joseph in Genesis, chapters 37-50, highlighting the concept expressed in chapter 50, verse 20, “Even though you intended to do harm to me, God intended it for good, in order to preserve a numerous people, as he is doing today.” helping us see that what Satan intends for evil, God redeems for good.

The class starts at 6:30pm and meets in the Spirit Center of the Smith Covenant Center building. If you desire to participate online, it will be available via ZOOM, with a link going out by email at 5:00pm on Wednesday afternoons. Books are available for $10 at the church office. They are not required for participation in the class.
